Engineering Drawing Practices and Document Control
Creating an accurate drawing is only half the engineering challenge; managing, identifying, and controlling that drawing throughout its lifespan is equally critical. The ASME Y14.100 standard establishes the essential engineering drawing practices that govern how drawings are administered.
The Title Block
The title block is the administrative heart of the drawing. Typically located in the bottom right corner of the sheet, it serves as the official metadata record for the document. An engineering drawing is not considered a valid controlled document without a properly populated title block.
Essential Title Block Information
- Drawing Title: A brief, descriptive name of the part or assembly (e.g., "PUMP HOUSING, MAIN").
- Drawing Number: A unique alphanumeric identifier assigned by the organization's document control system. This is the primary reference key for the part.
- Revision Block: Indicates the current version of the drawing (e.g., Rev A, Rev B). It ensures manufacturing is building to the most up-to-date specifications.
- Company Identity: The name, logo, or CAGE code of the organization that owns the design rights.
- Signatures and Dates:
- Drawn By: The drafter or engineer who created the file.
- Checked By: An independent reviewer who verified the drawing against standards.
- Approved By: The engineering authority releasing the drawing for production.
- Scale: The primary drawing scale (e.g., 1:1, 1:2).
- Sheet Number: Necessary for multi-page drawings (e.g., "Sheet 1 of 3").
Tolerances and General Notes
To prevent the drawing from becoming cluttered with repetitive numbers, the title block usually contains a General Tolerance Block. This block dictates the default tolerance for any dimension on the drawing that does not have a specific tolerance applied to it (e.g., "Unless otherwise specified, 2-place decimals are ").
Similarly, General Notes are placed above or to the left of the title block. These notes apply to the entire drawing and cover requirements like default deburring ("BREAK ALL SHARP EDGES"), coating specifications, or testing requirements.
Revision Control
Engineering designs change. When a drawing is modified after it has been officially released, strict revision control must be enforced to prevent manufacturers from using obsolete blueprints.
- Revision History Block: Typically located in the top right corner of the drawing. It logs:
- The revision letter.
- A brief description of the change.
- The date of the change.
- The approving authority for the change.
- Revision Indicators: When a specific dimension or feature is changed, a symbol (often a triangle containing the revision letter) is placed immediately adjacent to the changed feature on the drawing field, guiding the manufacturer directly to the modification.
Modern CAD Integration
While traditional standards were developed for paper drawings, modern engineering relies heavily on Computer-Aided Design (CAD) systems.
- Model-Based Definition (MBD): In advanced systems, the 3D CAD model itself becomes the authoritative document. Dimensions, tolerances, and notes are attached directly to the 3D model in digital space, rather than relying solely on a 2D projected sheet.
- PDM / PLM Systems: Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software systems digitally enforce the practices of ASME Y14.100. They control check-in/check-out processes, automatically increment revision numbers, and route drawings for digital signature approvals, ensuring a flawless chain of custody for engineering data.
