Engineering drawings use standardized visual elements to ensure consistency and clarity. Understanding line types, scales, and dimensioning principles is essential for reading and creating technical drawings.
Common Engineering Line Concepts
Different types of lines, often referred to as the "alphabet of lines," convey specific meanings in a drawing. Their thickness (weight) and pattern help distinguish between object boundaries, hidden features, and theoretical axes.
- Visible (Object) Lines: Continuous, thick lines used to represent the visible edges and outlines of an object. These are the most prominent lines on a drawing.
- Hidden Lines: Dashed lines composed of short line segments. They represent edges or boundaries that are not visible from the current viewing angle but exist behind solid surfaces.
- Centerlines: Thin lines composed of alternating long and short dashes. They indicate the center of symmetrical features, such as holes, cylinders, and paths of motion.
- Dimension Lines: Thin lines, typically terminating with arrows, that show the extent and direction of a dimension. The numerical value is placed near or within this line.
- Extension Lines: Thin lines extending from the object to indicate the exact points between which a dimension is measured. They do not touch the object directly (a small gap is left for clarity).
Basic Scale Concept
Because it is rarely practical to draw an object at its actual physical size, engineering drawings are scaled.
Drawing Scale vs. Actual Size:
- Full Scale (1:1): The drawing is exactly the same size as the real object.
- Enlarged Scale (e.g., 2:1, 10:1): Used for very small objects. A 2:1 scale means the drawing is twice as large as the real part.
- Reduced Scale (e.g., 1:2, 1:100): Used for large objects like buildings or large machinery. A 1:100 scale means 1 unit on the drawing represents 100 units in reality.
The scale is always prominently noted in the drawing's title block. However, dimensions written on the drawing always state the actual size of the object, regardless of the drawing's scale.
Basic Dimensioning Awareness
Dimensioning provides the exact measurements necessary to manufacture the part. It combines dimension lines, extension lines, and numbers.
Key concepts in dimensioning include:
- Clarity: Dimensions should be placed outside the outline of the part whenever possible.
- Completeness: Every feature must be dimensioned fully, but not over-dimensioned (no redundant dimensions).
- Readability: Text should be horizontal or aligned with the dimension line, easily readable from the bottom or right side of the sheet.
- Units: Standard units (e.g., millimeters for SI drawings, inches for Imperial drawings) are used consistently. The title block typically states the default unit, so it is not repeated on every number.
