Part and Assembly Drawings
Manufacturing a complex machine requires different types of documentation for different stages of the process. The machinist making individual components needs different information than the technician putting those components together. This is why engineering separates Part Drawings from Assembly Drawings.
Part Drawings (Detail Drawings)
A Part Drawing (or Detail Drawing) defines a single, individual, non-divisible component.
- Purpose: To provide all the geometric, dimensional, material, and surface finish information required to manufacture that specific piece from raw material.
- Content: It contains complete orthographic views, full dimensioning, tolerances, and specific manufacturing notes (e.g., "Heat treat to 45 HRC").
- Rule of Thumb: A part drawing should represent an item that cannot be taken apart any further without destroying it.
Assembly Drawings
An Assembly Drawing shows how multiple individual parts fit together to create a larger functional unit (a sub-assembly or a final product).
- Purpose: To instruct the assembly technician on how to put the components together, establishing the spatial relationship between the parts.
- Content: It generally does not include the detailed dimensions of the individual parts (since they have already been manufactured using their part drawings). It may include overall assembly dimensions, installation dimensions, or required clearances.
- Exploded Views: Often, assembly drawings use a 3D isometric "exploded" view, pulling the components apart along their axes of assembly to clearly show the order of operations.
Bill of Materials (BOM) Awareness
Every assembly drawing requires a list of the parts needed to build it. This is called the Bill of Materials (BOM) or Parts List.
- Item Number: A sequential number (1, 2, 3...) assigned to each unique part in the assembly. These numbers correspond to "balloons" (circles pointing to the parts) on the assembly drawing itself.
- Quantity: How many of that specific part are needed for one assembly.
- Part Number: The unique engineering drawing number for that component.
- Description: The name of the part.
- Material / Remarks: What the part is made of, or if it is a standard off-the-shelf component (like a specific standard bolt or bearing).
Reading a Simple Assembly Drawing
To read an assembly drawing:
- Look at the visual representation to understand the overall shape.
- Find the reference balloon pointing to the specific part you are interested in.
- Look up that balloon's Item Number in the Bill of Materials.
- Use the Part Number from the BOM to find the corresponding Detail Drawing if you need to know how to manufacture that part.
