Engineering Safety Domains

While safety principles apply everywhere, hazards generally fall into distinct physical domains. Engineers must be aware of the specific mechanisms that make each domain dangerous.

1. Pressure Hazards

  • The Mechanism: Gases and liquids stored under high pressure contain massive amounts of potential energy. If a vessel or pipe ruptures, that energy is released explosively.
  • Exposure: Pipelines, air compressors, steam boilers, hydraulic systems.
  • Precautions: Never stand directly in front of a pressurized valve being opened. Always verify a system is fully depressurized before maintenance (Lockout/Tagout).

2. Electrical Hazards

  • The Mechanism: The human body conducts electricity. Current passing through the heart can cause fatal arrhythmia, and high-energy arcs can cause severe burns (Arc Flash).
  • Exposure: Power lines, circuit breakers, exposed wiring, wet environments near electrical equipment.
  • Precautions: Treat all wires as live until proven dead with a meter. Only trained personnel should open electrical panels.

3. Chemical Hazards

  • The Mechanism: Chemicals can cause harm through inhalation (toxic gases), skin absorption, or ingestion. They can also cause fires or explosions.
  • Exposure: Refineries, manufacturing plants, laboratories, confined spaces where gases pool.
  • Precautions: Always read the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS/SDS) before handling a new chemical. Understand the difference between flammability, toxicity, and corrosivity.

4. Mechanical Hazards

  • The Mechanism: Moving parts contain kinetic energy that can crush, shear, or entangle human limbs.
  • Exposure: Conveyor belts, gears, robotic arms, vehicle traffic.
  • Precautions: Never bypass or remove a physical machine guard. Ensure loose clothing or long hair is secured around rotating equipment.

5. Working at Height (Gravity)

  • The Mechanism: Gravity accelerates falling objects (and bodies). A fall from even a few meters can be fatal. Likewise, a small tool dropped from a height becomes a deadly projectile.
  • Exposure: Scaffolding, roofs, construction sites, ladders.
  • Precautions: Use fall protection systems (harnesses/railings) when working above designated heights. Keep tools tethered to prevent dropping them on workers below.
